Wardell Cesar Smith, born in Des Moines, Iowa in 1936, shares his journey from a young, newly married college student to a career Army officer. He reflects on joining the Army in 1956, early experiences with segregation during basic training, and his service with the 82nd Airborne Division and as an infantry advisor in Vietnam. Smith recounts the realities of combat, leadership under fire, the loss of fellow soldiers, and the emotional weight of command. He also speaks on returning home, the challenges veterans faced after Vietnam, and the lasting lessons his service taught him—about teamwork, responsibility, and caring for the people beside you.
