Houston, Texas, November, 1983 In the beginning was the plague of recession in oil, gas and real estate. Then came a tornado and afterwards a hurricane. The floods followed. Houstonians began saying that the world was coming to an end. This week a swarm of locusts arrived to prove them right, at least those who go by the Bible on such matters. Actually, they were not locusts but their cousins, katydids, millions of them. The insects, three to four inches long, descended on a stretch of Main Street and alit on shop windows in such numbers that it was all but impossible to look out. Shoppers were driven off in horror. A Few Stragglers Remain By today all but a few straggler bugs had moved on, leaving Houstonians to marvel at the latest natural disaster to hit them. In the spring a tornado took out a wide swatch of the city. In August Hurricane Alicia hurtled through, taking with it much of Houston's vegetation and fenestration, and then came floods a few weeks later. How could anything else possibly happen?
