In 1923, one of the earliest “meme” songs, “Yes! We Have No Bananas,” was everywhere — it was on everyone’s lips. That same year, a parody response, “I’ve Got the ‘Yes! We Have No Bananas’ Blues,” dropped as an early diss track of sorts, with the writers lamenting how sick they were of hearing the hit nonstop. The problem feels surprisingly modern. Nyx Owlsey is an alternative rock project with a female lead vocal, featuring music generated from my own source material and lyrics contributed by friends.
