VN24 - Dec 20, 2021 - Ascheberg / Germany - The tractor unit of a semi-truck crashed in to a bridge pillar on the A1 freeway between Ascheberg and Hamm-Bockum/ Werne at around 11:15 on Monday morning. Previously, the tractor-trailer, which was initially traveling southbound on the right lane in the direction of Dortmund, had left the road to the right for reasons that are not yet clear and crashed into the guardrails. The truck then swerved and skidded across the left lane. In the process, it hit a red car traveling in the same direction at the same time and broke through the concrete median barrier. There, the tractor unit and the car collided with a bridge pillar. As a result of the collision, the driver's cab tore off the chassis of the tractor unit and flew onto the oncoming carriageway in the direction of Bremen. The accident resulted in life-threatening injuries to the truck driver and serious injuries to the passenger car driver. The A1 freeway had to be fully closed in both directions for extensive recovery and cleaning. The recovery work lasted until the evening hours.
