Jung’s Diagnosis of Nietzsche’s Subjectivisation of Consciousness While Nietzsche is a major influence on Jung, Jung diagnosed Nietzsche as undergoing a subjectivisation of consciousness and ego inflation. While Jung agrees with much of what Nietzsche has to say, as they aim at similar goals, Jung disagrees with the process of how Nietzsche went about implementing his idea of Zarathustra, as Jung felt Nietzsche was identifying Zarathustra, and thus identifying with God. This identification with God, in Jungian langauge, is when a person's ego identifies with the Self. This is the subjectivisation of consciousness, as the introvert who is more influenced by the subjective factor, begins to identify their consciousness (i.e. their ego) with the psychic processes as a whole (i.e. the self). This relation of the psyche, according to Jung, is somewhat of an imbalanced equation, as the ego, being only such a small aspect of the psyche, has to now content with the totality of the objective world. The correct equation, would be for the Self to content with the world... for the totality of the psyche to contend with the totality of the objective world... for the inner world to contend with the outter world. Jung continues to diagnose Nietzsche with an ego inflation and attributes this to being the cause of Nietzsche's eventual descent into madness. Nietzsche may well have had an inflated ego-consciousness, as some of his writings sometimes suggest, however, there are other explinations that seem to account for Nietzsche's eventual madness.
