On 21 September 1993, amid mounting political tensions, Russian President Boris Yeltsin dissolved Russia's parliament, the Supreme Soviet, and announced he would rule by decree pending new elections the following year. This act triggered a constitutional crisis that culminated in the deadliest street fighting in Moscow since the October Revolution of 1917. This documentary provides a day-by-day account of the Russian Constitutional Crisis of 1993, a pivotal moment in the political evolution of post-Soviet Russia. Using original news footage from the ITN Archive, it covers events from Yeltsin’s controversial decree to the violent storming of the Russian White House by Russian army and special forces units on 4 October 1993. The crisis marked a profound confrontation between Russia’s executive and legislative branches. Yeltsin’s decree—widely regarded as unconstitutional—provoked fierce resistance from Vice President Alexander Rutskoy and Supreme Soviet Chairman Ruslan Khasbulatov. The standoff escalated into mass protests, armed clashes in Moscow’s streets, and ultimately, military intervention in favour of Yeltsin. The footage of the storming of the Russian White House was captured by ITN cameraman Jon Steele, whose work earned him the 'Cameraman of the Year' award from the Royal Television Society and a BAFTA for factual television photography.
