Discover the Vertical Courtyard House, a stunning private retreat located in the lush Santa Monica Canyon, California. In this house tour, we explore the personal residence of architect David Montalba, a project designed specifically for his family of four. The primary design intent of this 5,450-square-foot home is to dissolve the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces. By blending Californian modernism with a refined Swiss design influence, the architecture prioritizes craft, materiality, and the framing of nature. Key Architectural Features: The Vertical Courtyard: A central three-story atrium that feeds natural light through every floor, including the basement, providing sightlines throughout the entire home. Dual Volumes: The house is split into two distinct volumes, separated by a landscaped strip that bisects the plan. Material Palette: A simple yet honest selection of materials, including corrugated white oak, sandblasted concrete, and teak louvres. Seamless Integration: Fully operable glazing that "pockets away" to remove traditional markers of walls and corners, making the interior an extension of the garden. This residence serves as a lived-in approach to design, where family values and a specific coastal lifestyle inform every line and texture.
