Newer light therapy offers hope for skin damage repair

A new form of light therapy is offering promising results in the treatment of various skin conditions, according to medical experts. Red Light Therapy (RLT) employs low levels of red light to address issues such as pre-cancerous and cancerous lesions, psoriasis, and warts. Dr. Elizabeth Muennich of Dermatology and Skin Care Associates explained the process: "So this is a specific wavelength that is going to activate that's on our patient Greg's skin." The therapy is applied after topical medications, causing affected cells to undergo apoptosis, or programmed cell death. Patient Greg Blankenship underwent the treatment, which involves wearing protective goggles while red light is applied for 20 minutes on each side of the face. The therapy is believed to work by stimulating the mitochondria, the power plants of the body's cells, to enhance skin repair, promote new cell growth, and reduce wrinkles.
