Ellicott City’s story begins with the Ellicott brothers, who established a milling operation along the Patapsco River, transforming the region’s agriculture. The town later became home to the first 13 miles of the B&O Railroad, marking the start of America’s railway expansion. Benjamin Banneker, a free Black man born just across the river, made his mark in astronomy and helped survey Washington, DC. As transportation evolved, the arrival of the trolley line connected Ellicott City to Baltimore, making it a popular day-trip destination. Today, remnants of that history remain, including the Trolley Stop Restaurant, which has been serving the community since the 1980s in a building dating back to 1833.
