VN24 - 15-02-2025 (D/M/Y) - Hemer / Germany - Shortly after 8:00 a.m. on Saturday morning, a serious traffic accident involving a bus occurred on the 'Hauptstraße' in Hemer (NRW). The bus on route 33 was coming from Altena, heading eastbound towards Hemer city center. For reasons still unknown so far, according to the police, the 62-year-old driver lost control of the bus near a pizzeria and veered off the sloping road to the left. There he rammed into a parked blue Mercedes, pushing it onto a Renault Clio parked behind it. Both vehicles were thrown onto the road, with the Mercedes spinning on its own axis and the Renault being pushed backwards into the shop window of a pizzeria on the other side of the road. It then uprooted a large tree and was deflected to the right. On the road, it collided with an oncoming white Mercedes and two other cars parked on the right-hand side of the road. In total, the bus itself and five other vehicles were damaged. After about 100 meters, the bus crashed unbraked into a ledge of a solid brick wall of a former factory building and was fortunately stopped. Fortunately, because it was the last chance to really stop the errant journey of the bus weighing several tons. After that, it could have smashed straight into a petrol station and a supermarket without another possible obstacle. The town of Hemer escaped an even greater catastrophe. Nevertheless, according to initial findings, a total of 13 people were injured in the accident. The bus driver from Arnsberg (62) and a female co-driver from Hemer (19) had to be airlifted to hospitals in Giessen and Bochum with serious injuries by two rescue helicopters that landed at a nearby road junction. The bus driver's life is in danger. Eight other people were taken by ambulance to nearby hospitals with serious injuries. Three other people were slightly injured. Two children and a teenager were among the injured. The police have started an investigation into the cause of the accident.
