US Network TV coverage of the June 5th 1966 spacewalk (EVA) of Gemini 9. Gene Cernan completed the USA's second EVA and attempted to use the Astronaut Maneuvering Unit (AMU) which was located at the rear of the Gemini, in the adapter section. With no hand holds or adequate foot restraints the traverse to the AMU was difficult enough and, once there, Cernan described being exhausted through the effort. Several technical issues were encountered on the EVA including fogging of the visor, high suit temperature , excessive suit inflation and poor communication systems. Cernan was blind by the visor fogging and his own sweat, and exhausted and overheating both by the effort of getting to and attaching the AMU. It was decided to abandon the attempt and for Cernan to get back into the spacecraft, not an easy task at all, requiring him to unstrap the AMU and traverse back to his seat in the hatch of the spacecraft whilst fighting the weightless state, the suit temperature, lack of visual cues and his own physical state. All of these issues compounded to make Cernans EVA one of the most hazardous in human spaceflight history. The AMU was never flown again.
