Human Nature - The Effects of Arousal

When I first read about the Steubenville rape my mind immediately went to a study by the great Dan Ariely a few years ago. So here is the Professor himself explaining what they did and what they found -- and their findings are seriously worrying. The results appear to support claims by Evolutionary Psychologists about the modular mind (see for instance R. Kurzban's TEDx talk). It seems that men come pre-equipped with certain contingent strategies which may well be activated under certain circumstances. And by 'men' I mean the vast majority of men -- not a few disturbed individuals. Clearly society needs to do a great deal of work on the men to ensure that women are safe (and reporting the culprits' conviction in the way the CNN did in the Steubenville case is certainly not a step in the right direction...)
