Please watch: "PM Modi on Frankly Speaking with Arnab Goswami | Exclusive Full Interview" ►http://bit.ly/297mDAR ~-~~-~~~-~~-~ A newly-wed inter-caste couple was thrashed in public, allegedly by the woman's relatives, who then hacked the man to death in full public view in Udumalpet, Tiruppur, on Sunday (March 13). The woman sustained severe injuries to the head when she attempted to save her husband from the attack in a crowded bus stand at 3 PM. The sickle-wielding assailants then fled the scene on a motorcycle. Police identified the victim as V Shankar, 22, from Chavadi Street in Kumaralingam village, 15km from Udumalpet. Shankar, a dalit, married Kowsalya, 19, daughter of Chinnasamy from Palani in Dindigul district, eight months ago, despite opposition from her parents. Shankar's family had accepted the marriage and the couple was living in Kumaralingam. "Kowsalya suffered cut injuries to the head. She has been admitted to the ICU at Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital where doctors attending to her said her condition is stable," a police officer said. Special teams have been formed to track the three assailants. They are equipped with photographs of the three fleeing from the spot, taken by the public. Police said Kowsalya and Shankar had met at a private engineering college in Pollachi where they were second and fourth year students respectively. "Kowsalya stopped going to college after the wedding while Shankar continued his studies. The couple had gone to do some shopping in Udumalpet on Sunday. When they arrived at the bus stop, the gang accosted and attacked them," the officer said. Even though the bus stand was crowded, no one intervened to save the couple. Only after the assailants fled, witnesses rushed the pair to the hospital. Shankar died on the way to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital. "The couple had faced death threats from Kowsalya's family from the day they got married," Shankar's father Velusamy, a daily wage worker, said.
