Tethered cord means it is a developmental anomaly. Usually spinal cord ends at the level of lower border of L1. From there to the roots there is no cord below. Sometimes what happens is this cord is attached with the sacrum with fibrous band. So during growing, when the child grows, it pulls the spinal cord downwards. So instead of ending at lower border of L1, it may end at L2 or L3 and what happens is there is a constant pressure in spinal cord there may be a constant pain especially while bending and also later it may involve some neurological deficit also. This has to be diagnosed with MRI and we have to diagnose Tethered cord syndrome. Once the diagnosis is done, the treatment is simple. We have to smiley cut of the Tethered cord, the fibrous band that is attaching the fibrous band to the bone. So that has to be cut and release the tethered cord.
