In 1963, deep in the Soviet Union, animators Leonid Aristov and Igor Nikolaev released The African Tale (Африканская сказка)—a short film unlike anything the world had seen. At a time when Western media often reduced Africans to stereotypes and caricatures, this Soviet cartoon dared to place a Black protagonist at the heart of the story, portraying him with dignity, beauty, and strength. Through allegory, the film reimagined colonial powers as predatory animals and cast Africa as a resilient defender of freedom. More than just a children’s tale, it became a striking work of political art—animation as resistance, released at the height of Africa’s independence movements and the Cold War. This documentary uncovers the hidden history of The African Tale, exploring its symbolism, historical context, and the surprising role Soviet cinema played in global anti-colonial struggles. Forgotten by many, the film remains a powerful reminder of how art can challenge empire, reframe identity, and speak truth in unexpected places.
