That was especially true for my family when I was growing up. After my parents fled Estonia during the second world war, they settled in Minnesota, the land of 10,000 lakes, because it reminded them of the lakes and countryside of Estonia. We spent our childhood summers jumping into lakes, with our dad launching us into the air on his shoulders, propelling us into dives and belly flops. Water skiing replaced water games as we got older, and we spent idyllic summers skimming across the blue surface of our lake at high speeds. As a teenager, I joined the local water ski club, and they taught me to water ski jump, to be part of a water ballet with all of us on our slalom skis, and how to build pyramids with my fellow skiers. When I dropped my own skis and climbed on the shoulders of the men below, I knew I was safe, and in for a thrill. Water was joy to us, but it also meant escape, maybe an even greater escape for our parents, who left their families in Estonia, behind the iron curtain." From the director: When I found 12 hours of my grandpa's 8mm home movie footage, I knew that I had stumbled upon a gold mine. I brought it to my good friends at Town Hall, and we sat down together to find common elements between the music and the visuals, cutting it down into a series of short videos that aim to capture the experience of growing up in small town Minnesota. I never got the chance to meet my grandfather, but this is the greatest gift he could have ever given me, and I hope my grandkids watch it someday.
