Clay Wright’s story is fascinating. He was one of the first people I met when I first started paddling and one of the nicest people on the water. From the jump, he was raised in a river-running family with long road trips, campfire, and days built around being on the water. By college, Clay had a choice: follow the traditional path… or go into the whitewater industry. Which he did well and built a life around the river. That gamble paid off. He ended up getting paid to run the Gauley River, linking up with a crew of paddlers who were chasing rivers all over the globe. One trip led to another, Costa Rica, Chile, New Zealand, & Europe. All of the sudden, the idea of law school didn’t stand a chance. Clay dove headfirst into the sport competing, starring in kayak films, and representing Team USA in freestyle kayaking multiple times. Along the way, he turned his passion into a career, working with some of the biggest names in the industry like Pyranha, Perception, and now Jackson Kayak, all while coaching the next generation of paddlers.
