The launch of a common currency in West Africa, known as the Eco, has faced numerous challenges and delays. The main factors affecting the implementation of the currency include: Hurdles in macroeconomic convergence: The countries in West Africa have different economic structures, levels of development, and fiscal policies, making it difficult to achieve the necessary convergence for a common currency. Institutional and policy realities: The existing institutional and policy frameworks in West Africa do not yet support a transition to a single currency. Competition from digital currencies: The launch of digital currencies in Ghana and Nigeria has threatened the progress towards a common legal tender in West Africa, as these digital currencies could potentially undermine the need for a common physical currency. Political and economic tensions: The struggle between Anglophone and Francophone countries in West Africa, particularly between Nigeria and Ivory Coast, has created challenges in establishing a common currency, with concerns about the influence of France on the UEMOA's monetary policy decisions. Despite these challenges, there is still some momentum towards the launch of the Eco. In June 2021, the Heads of State of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) adopted a roadmap for the launch of the common currency in 2027. However, the recent events and ongoing issues in the region, such as coup d'états, could further delay the implementation of the common currency. Contact me: contactiamafrikan@gmail.com #ecowas #eco
