Born into a minor gentry family, he became a Member of Parliament in the 1620s. Opposed to the absolute monarchy of Charles I, he joined the civil war between the king’s forces (the Royalists) and those of Parliament (the Parliamentarians). Cromwell became a formidable military leader, commanding the "New Model Army," a disciplined and effective force. Thanks to his victories, notably at Marston Moor (1644) and Naseby (1645), he played a key role in the defeat of Charles I, who was captured, tried, and executed in 1649. After the fall of the monarchy, England became a republic called the Commonwealth. Cromwell gradually accumulated more power and eventually became Lord Protector in 1653, a quasi-dictatorial position he held until his death. He imposed an authoritarian and Puritanical regime, notably banning public entertainments. Cromwell died in 1658. His son briefly succeeded him but, unable to maintain power, paved the way for the restoration of the monarchy in 1660 under Charles II. Today, Cromwell remains a controversial figure: a hero of liberty for some, a tyrant for others, particularly in Ireland, where his military campaigns were especially brutal.
