This presentation was delivered at the 9th Annual Cannabis Research Conference (CRC), held October 6–8, 2025, at The Sentinel Hotel in Portland, Oregon — a leading multidisciplinary forum advancing cannabis science and policy research. In this 25-minute talk, Christian Maynard, Ph.D. Candidate in Sociology at Washington State University, presents findings from a study examining how evolving cannabis legalization shapes adolescent use and availability perceptions. Using data from over 97,000 12th-grade students surveyed by Monitoring the Future (2015–2023) across 45 states, the study analyzes relationships between legalization status, dispensary access, availability, and consumption techniques (smoking, vaping, edibles, and multi-method use). Results show that while overall adolescent cannabis use has remained stable in post-legalization states, technique-specific trends differ. Medical and adult-use contexts are associated with higher frequencies of use, while perceived availability remains highest in medical states. These findings offer insights into how policy environments shape youth cannabis behaviors during the era of legalization.
