It wasn't just baseball on fans' minds at Rate Field on Friday (May 9). Chicago White Sox supporters were celebrating the news that Pope Leo XIV — the first American Pope and a native of South Chicago — is one of their own. Born Robert Prevost on the city's South Side, Pope Leo was elected on Thursday (May 8). While early reports mistakenly linked him to the rival Cubs, Sox fans were quick to set the record straight. "He's a true White Sox fan," said David Hughes Jr., dressed in a papal costume. "They found a clip of him at Game One of the 2005 World Series. It's undeniable." At the ballpark, fans waved signs reading "Pope Leo, Pray For Us," donned papal outfits, and joked that divine help might be just what the struggling team needs. The White Sox set a league record for losses last season — 121 in total. "We had Obama, and nothing happened," said fan Perfecto Diaz. "Now we have the Pope. This time, we'll get a blessing." Despite another tough start to the season, the mood was upbeat. "We're on the come-up," Hughes said. "The Pope's gonna give us that extra sauce we need."
