Cherokee artist Roy Boney works in graphic illustration, cartoons, digital art and design, animated film and studio art. Schooled in Locust Grove, Oklahoma, Boney earned a BA in Graphic Design from Oklahoma State University. Later, as a Fellow at Sequoyah Research Center at the University of Arkansas, he completed an MFA in Studio Art. In between, he created two animation films in Cherokee and Mvskoke Creek, published illustrations in graphic novels, and contributed a chapter to all-Native comic book. Boney won Grand Award at the Trail of Tears Art show in 2006, and in 2013, he received a solo show at Southern Plains Indian Museum. He currently directs the Cherokee Nation language program with a focus on integrating technology and language, while pursuing his own art. This interview was conducted as part of the Oklahoma Native Artists Oral History Project at the OSU Library.
