With a history of more than 150 years, this annual festival symbolizes unity among the five major Chinese dialect groups in the city. In this video, we capture the important ritual of “Zhong Shen Chu Luan” (众神出銮), where the Five Deities from the Johor Ancient Temple are ceremonially brought out and placed at the temporary palace (Xing Gong). The temple palace is then opened to devotees for prayers and blessings. During the festival period, the area around the Xing Gong becomes lively with festive food stalls, while traditional Chinese opera (酬神戏) is performed as an offering to the deities. This video documents these meaningful traditions that many visitors may not fully notice during the celebration. The next episode will feature the spectacular Johor Chingay Night Parade, where the deities tour Johor Bahru city accompanied by lion dances, dragon dances and thousands of devotees.
