WE WERE SHOCKED! Latest Prices in Istanbul 2025 Is It Expensive? Sultanahmet Türkiye Walking Tour

How Expensive is Istanbul now, in July 2025? What is the inflation in Türkiye? We have all heard about the hyperinflation here so I decided to explore the Sultanahmet area to see what the prices are like in restaurants, cafes, the trams and currency exchanges. This is probably how most tourists measure expense - eating out and travelling around! I walked all around Sultanahmet, Alamdar, Çemberlitaş and Beyazit Grand Bazaar (Kapali Çarsi) stopping at restaurants and cafes along the way to compare prices on their menus. I also took the time to soak up the atmosphere and look into the landmarks and the odd bit of history here and there. The simple highlights are, for example, an adana kebab (single kebab) averages about 400 to 600 TRY, a doner kebab plate is about 500 to 700 TRY etc. The average price of a takeaway wrap is about 300 to 450. A meal in a lokanta is probably around 600 per person. The conversion rates on the day were GBP=54, EUR=47 and USD=40 TRY. Also, a tram ride costs 27 lira for each journey. You need an Istanbulkart which costs 165 lira. You then have to top it up with what you think you'll need for the day. Don't over fill the card because you can't get a refund of unused balance! Several people can use the same card so 1 is enough for the average family (I think up to 5 people can share but please check for latest rules). Hope you find this useful.
