Joy of Meta-Tracing Just-in-Time Compilation: More Than Just a VM Generator (Video, MPLR 2025) Hidehiko Masuhara (Institute of Science Tokyo) Abstract: Meta just-in-time (JIT) compiler frameworks automatically generate JIT compilers from an interpreter definition of a language. Rooted in the theory of partial evaluation—also known as the Futamura projections—these frameworks, such as RPython and Graal/Truffle, have been successfully used to build high-performance virtual machines for many programming languages. This talk focuses on tracing-based meta-JIT compiler frameworks and discusses their potential beyond their original scope. In particular, this includes techniques that generate multi-tier JIT compilers and efficiently implement multi-staged programs.
