The CIW Express: Cynthia Irwin-Williams and North American Archaeology in the 21st Century | Eastern New Mexico University On March 20, 2025, Dr. Stephen Nash, President and CEO of Archaeology Southwest, and Paul Reed, New Mexico State Director and Preservation Archaeologist at Archaeology Southwest, gave an insightful lecture at Eastern New Mexico University’s 26th Annual Cynthia Irwin-Williams Lectureship. Held in honor of the legendary Dr. Cynthia Irwin-Williams, a pioneering figure in North American archaeology, this talk explored her lasting impact on the field and examined the direction of archaeology in the 21st century. Dr. Irwin-Williams taught at ENMU from 1964 to 1982 and was a major force in shaping the study of anthropology and archaeology. As one of the few women to lead the Society for American Archaeology in the late 1970s, her work continues to inspire future generations of archaeologists. Join Dr. Nash and Paul Reed as they discuss the evolution of archaeology and the ongoing influence of Dr. Irwin-Williams’ groundbreaking work.
