A playthrough of Bruner House's 2023 license-based sci-fi adventure game for Windows PC, Star Trek: Resurgence. Tons of Star Trek games have been made over the years, but outside of a couple of 90s point-and-click adventures, they've generally failed to capture the feel and spirit of the show. Thankfully, that's not the case with Star Trek: Resurgence. Developed by Dramatic Labs, a company born out of the ashes of Telltale Games, Resurgence is a game cast from the "choices matter" mold that was popularized by Telltale's The Walking Dead series, and it's a good fit for the Star Trek universe. The game takes place sixteen years after the events of The Next Generation. The USS Resolute, a Federation science vessel, has been assigned to mediate a dispute between the Alydians and the Hotari. In true Star Trek fashion, things are not as they first appear to be, and what begins as a simple diplomatic mission quickly escalates into an all-out battle for the future of the alpha quadrant against a threat first encountered by Picard's Enterprise in the first season of TNG. The story plays out over the course of several "episodes" that alternate between the viewpoints of Commander Jara Rydek, the Resolute's first officer, and Carter Diaz, an engineer, and the A/B plot structure feels like something pulled right out of the show. All the things you'd expect from old school Star Trek are faithfully represented - you get to play politics with aliens, fly shuttles, shoot phasers, scan things with tricorders, and take in endless amounts of technobabble - and it's clear that the writers understood what made the classic sci-fi soap opera formula so compelling. It's some of the best Star Trek material to come out of the past couple of decades. The gameplay is the typical Telltale mix of dialogue trees, exploration, and QTEs, and it works well in this context. There's not much in the way of challenge, and the story plays out largely the same regardless of your decisions, but the game maintains the illusion of choice well enough to keep you engaged throughout, and the quality of the writing and the voice performances is pretty good. Those things capably carry the experience, and that's a good thing, because the low-budget nature of the production rears its ugly head in several ways. The alien races and the environments look quite good, but several of the more humanoid character models and their animations look like they've just stepped out of a cheap PS3 game. Everyone walks like they've got coathangers in their shirts, eyelines don't match up during conversations, and the facial expressions are comically creepy. Miranda is a horrifying wax blob of a woman, and I couldn't help but laugh every time Jara pulled out The Rock's "people's eyebrow" or squinted aggressively whenever someone pissed her off. The PC version also runs horribly - stutters and major framerate drops are constant annoyances, no matter how powerful a machine you're running it on. But at the end of the day, I thoroughly enjoyed Star Trek: Resurgence. It feels like true Star Trek at its core, and it's a welcome palette cleanser in the wake of Star Trek: Picard. _____________ No cheats were used during the recording of this video.
