The world woke up in the morning of January 3rd, 2026 to the rather incredulous news of the US military strike on the Venezuelan capital Caracas to capture its president, Nicolas Maduro. The US justified the attack and the capture of the president on charges of narcoterrorism, an allegation the US had long held against Venezuela. However, many believed this to only be an excuse, a pretext to something more lucrative: access to Venezuela's oil. Venezuela is home to vast oil reserves which has been its main export commodity since its oil industry boomed in the early 1990s. Once the world's top oil exporter, Venezuela's oil industry has since collapsed, dragging the national economy along with it, amidst ongoing political turmoil. But here's the twist. The US is the world's top producer of oil and currently the world has an oversupply of oil. Then why did the US take such a dangerous move to capture another sovereign nation's sitting president?
