Here is Cantiga #67 (A Reinna groriosa/ tant’ é de gran santidade) from Cantigas de Santa Maria, a collection of 420 poems with musical notation dedicated to the virgin Mary during the reign of Alfonso X of Castile El Sabio (1221-1284). It tells the story of a Knight, protected from the devil hiding in the body of a dead man, by the Virgin Mary. Story illustrated in the text. Performed here on medieval lute and vihuela de rueda. This instrument, known only from iconography in medieval Spain, is a type of hurdy-gurdy that had a lute like fingerboard rather than keys.
