Hohenpeißenberg is a municipality in the Weilheim-Schongau district of Upper Bavaria. The former mining town is located in the center of the Pfaffenwinkel. The landscape is characterized by the almost 1000 meter high Hoher Peißenberg, whose summit is located fairly centrally in the local area and offers a beautiful view of the Alps. The pilgrimage church of the Assumption of Mary is a well-known pilgrimage site and popular excursion destination. There is now a transmission tower and a meteorological observatory on the mountain, which is considered the oldest mountain weather station in the world. In 1514, local residents built a chapel on the Hoher Peißenberg. A ducal carer had a carved figure of the Mother of God brought there from the Schongau castle chapel. This figure quickly gained the reputation of a miraculous image and a pilgrimage developed. At the beginning of the 17th century, a second church (the pilgrimage church) was added, creating the current double church. The chapel is to the west of the church tower, the pilgrimage church itself to the east of it. The ensemble gives the peak of the mountain its typical silhouette. Augustinian canons of the Rottenbuch monastery supervised the pilgrimage to the mountain from 1604 until secularization (expropriation of the monasteries) in 1803. From 1615 to 1619, Provost Georg Siesmair had a new pilgrimage church built because the old one had become too small. During the War of the Spanish Succession, the miraculous image had to flee to Munich and returned to Hohenpeißenberg in 1705. As a result, new altars were built and the pilgrimage church was decorated in the Rococo style. The large ceiling fresco by Matthäus Günther in the Chapel of Grace on the mountain represents the handover of the pilgrimage site to the Rottenbuch monastery. The Augustinians also carried out the first meteorological observations. There have been virtually uninterrupted meteorological observation series since 1781, making it the oldest mountain weather station in the world. After secularization, the priest and the school teacher initially continued the measurements and recordings, and after the Second World War, the German Weather Service took over the weather observations. The monks also ran a school on the mountain; the elementary school was founded by the Augustinian canon Primus Koch (1752–1812). Classes began in April 1802. As part of the administrative reforms in Bavaria, today's municipality was created with the municipal edict of 1818. The local area previously belonged to Peiting. Hohenpeißenberg belonged to the Munich Rent Office and the Schongau Regional Court of the Electorate of Bavaria. The first construction phase of the old, former school building on the mountain was built from 1882 to 1883 - after the time of the monks.
