When your records are full of static, bad things happen, from your platter mat sticking to the records to dust clinging to the surface, creating more noise. And that means more cracks, pops, and an overall worse sound. Here are four ways that you can reduce static electricity in your vinyl records. First, keep your records clean with an anti-static record brush, like the one that comes in the Fluance VB52 record cleaning kit. About three spins of a record with this brush will keep your records clean, and help eliminate static electricity. Second, ditch the paper sleeves, for anti-static sleeves, like these. These sleeves are designed to keep static electricity off of your records, and they come with the added benefit of not scratching the surface of your record like those generic paper sleeves. These ones also have a rounded edge, which makes it easier to put the record in the jacket, because you don't have to bow the edges as much. Third, use an anti-static gun, like this one. Check the specific instructions for your own, but for this one, you hold it about twelve inches away from the record and slowly pull the trigger. Fourth, use either an acrylic platter or a cork mat. Both hold less of a static charge than a felt mat. For more videos about vinyl and home audio, check out one of these.
