I think for most of us, palpitations can be described as any unusual awareness of our heartbeat. It can be irregular, skipping, fluttering, or fast heart sensation, and it's pretty common. The first thing to say is that more often than not, palpitations are caused by a pretty benign or harmless condition. Oftentimes, it can be caused by something simple such as a few extra heartbeats in the heart which we all get throughout the day. Other times it can be caused by an abnormal heart rhythm, which can either be a fast heart rhythm or a slow heart rhythm. The best way to get to the bottom of palpitations would be to see your doctor. They can do a basic EKG and sometimes they'll order more long-term monitoring which would monitor your heartbeat or heart rhythm throughout the day. In general, when we talk about palpitations, it's a problem of the heart's rhythm. The rhythm of the heart is the electrical conduction of the heart that helps the heart beat in a synchronous fashion. Not all palpitation syndromes are arrhythmias or disrhythmias. Often times they're normal heart rhythms which are just interrupted periodically by extra heartbeats. Palpitations are very common and a lot of us get them throughout the day. They're also a very common reason for people to see their cardiologist. Luckily, most times people have complaints of palpitations it's from a benign or harmless condition and those are some general causes of palpitations.
