Three waves of nomads swept into Europe from the east: the Huns in the 5th century, the Avars in the 6th–8th centuries, and the Hungarians in the 9th century. Scientists extracted DNA from all three groups. The results turned history upside down. Among the Avars, 62% of the genes were eastern. Among the Hungarians, 21%. But one rare marker linked the Hungarians not to the steppe, but to the taiga—to the Yakuts, Evenks, and Evens. How did a European people end up with the genes of reindeer herders from the tundra? The answer is at the end of the video.
