U.S. military assets were seen operating in Puerto Rico on Sunday (December 21) as Washington’s buildup in the Caribbean continued, with a U.S. Navy replenishment oiler stationed at port, and a military aircraft active at Mercedita Airport in Ponce. The U.S. Navy replenishment oiler USNS Kanawha (T-AO-196) was docked at the Port of the Americas on Puerto Rico’s southern coast, with Navy personnel visible aboard the vessel. At Mercedita Airport, mechanics were seen working on V-22 Osprey aircraft while a CH-53E Super Stallion helicopters prepared for and conducted take-offs. The Trump administration has sent thousands of troops to the Caribbean, along with an aircraft carrier, warships and fighter jets, and has carried out strikes against suspected drug vessels in the region. U.S. forces have also seized a sanctioned oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela and declared what the administration has described as a “blockade” of sanctioned oil shipments entering and leaving the country. President Donald Trump has repeatedly said that strikes on land in Venezuela could follow.
