This video shows one of only a few different ways to tie-in a new, additional PVC ( or ABS) drainage branch in to an existing 3" PVC stack. This method is more reliable than "repair", or "slip" couplings at guaranteeing an easy, no-leak installation, and is code compliant as well. The fitting used is a "wye" fitting, but you could also use a "sanitary tee". This method also will work with tying-in to a horizontal branch -- but remember, in most parts of the U.S., you can only use a wye fitting to make the tie-in horizontally...a sanitary tee can only be used for tying in to a vertical stack . (There are some states that allow a sanitary tee to be used laying on its' side for tying in to a horizontal branch). Repair couplings ( or "slip" couplings) have no "stop" in the middle of the coupling ; the purpose for that is to allow it to slide back and forth, freely on the pipe. When using repair couplings, the process of laying out the cut-marks on the stack , and using short pieces of pipe glued in to the wye or san tee, is going to be nearly the same, except that you have to have more room to be able to slide the repair coupling on the pipe of the stack or branch that you want to tie in to. They do work if you are extremely meticulous in the execution of the tie-in procedure, and wrap the joints of the couplings several times with glue. In this video , we are tying in to 3" pipe, but this method will work for most sizes of DWV pipe. Note that when using 2" or 1-1/2" bands, the rubber is much harder to flip back, due to it being stiffer because of the smaller diameter.
