Church discipline is one of the most misunderstood and emotionally charged practices in Christianity. For some, the phrase evokes memories of shame, control, or spiritual abuse. For others, it raises difficult questions about love, authority, and accountability in the church. In this video, we slow down and ask a careful but necessary question: What does the Bible actually teach about church discipline — and what does it not teach? Specifically, how churches are called to confront serious, unrepentant sin with love, patience, and the goal of restoration. This is not a defense of harshness, public shaming, or institutional power. It is a biblical explanation of discipline as Scripture presents it: as an act of love, a call to repentance, and a means of restoration within the local church. We’ll explore: • Why church discipline assumes meaningful church membership • Where Jesus Himself teaches the pattern of discipline • How discipline relates to love, holiness, and the gospel • What biblical discipline is — and what it is not • Why this topic feels especially difficult in modern Western culture If you’ve been hurt by abuses of authority in the past, you are not alone — and abuse is not biblical discipline. But neither does Scripture allow us to redefine love as silence in the face of destructive sin. This video is part of an ongoing teaching series at Reformation Academy, where we explore historic Christian theology carefully, honestly, and without assuming prior agreement. Thank you for thinking deeply about this important subject.
