In this video I recreate Payson's "toboggan" hand plane made by some company at some point in human history around 1904. The original patent most likely belongs to the same person that patented this: https://patents.google.com/patent/US6.... It's possible that the patent was applied for, but never granted for this design, regardless it seems fairly rare and would make a fun project. This plane was clearly designed for inexpensive and quick manufacturing, along with incredible durability. In order to remake this tool, I used old photographs and literature findings to estimate the dimensions and materials. I needed to manufacture this plane in a very specific order of operations, otherwise I would be stuck and unable to access certain areas of the plane for finishing. I used a piece of 1/8" mild steel for the body and an old piece of high carbon steel I forged years ago for the blade. I don't have a full forge where I can heat a piece of steel this size up, so I had to use my torch and work quickly and at some points I just cold forged steel components. I'm not a real blacksmith, but I do think this would make a fun project for someone who is. I am sure they could make it much faster and cleaner than I did.
