Welcome to Singaraja, Bali — the beating heart of Bali's North Coast. Once the island's colonial capital, Singaraja holds a unique place in history as the first city occupied by the Dutch in 1849. The name itself means "Lion King" in Indonesian, and today, this port city still roars with life — a blend of Balinese tradition and a seafaring spirit. Singaraja is renowned for its stunning coastline and vibrant coral reefs, serving as a launch point for dolphin-watching tours that attract early risers hoping to glimpse pods of spinner dolphins leaping through the morning waves. Inland, emerald rice terraces and serene hot springs offer a quieter escape. At the same time, the city's harbor remains a vital hub for local commerce. But today, we're diving into the heart of Pasar Anyar, one of the largest traditional markets in Bali. A sensory overload — stalls overflowing with exotic fruits like dragonfruit with its flaming pink skin, sweet lychees wrapped in brittle red shells, honey-sweet pineapples, and salak (snake fruit) with its scaly peel and juicy, tangy flesh. The seafood section is equally mesmerizing, showcasing the bounty of Bali's northern waters. Ikan Kembung (Indian mackerel), Ikan Tongkol (little tunny tuna), Ikan Bawal (pomfret), and Ikan Ekor Kuning (yellowtail scad) are laid out on ice, ready for the day's catch to become someone's dinner. Small squid, known locally as cumi-cumi, are displayed in shimmering piles, a staple in Balinese seafood dishes. So join me as we navigate through narrow alleys filled with vibrant colors, fragrant spices, and the lively chatter of locals going about their daily shopping. This is the honest Bali — a place where history, culture, and culinary traditions come alive.
