The Mini Gastric Bypass: G&T Episode 16

The single anastomosis gastric bypass, colloquially known as mini gastric bypass, was recently endorsed by the ASMBS and, as such, is something we can consider offering here in the US. In fact, this procedure is the most commonly performed bariatric surgery in Asia and Europe. There are a couple of reasons we haven't adopted the mini gastric bypass in our practice. First, insurance does not yet cover it. Therefore patients have to pay cash for the procedure. Secondly, with all of the other bariatric surgeries available today, the mini gastric bypass has a very narrow subset of patients for whom it would be the ideal surgery. Essentially it would have to be a relatively lower BMI patient who does not suffer from reflux but has severe diabetes. Higher BMI patients are often better suited to the DS or SADI, while patients with acid reflux are better served with a traditional bypass. Regardless, having this procedure in our back pockets is yet another benefit to our patients.
