He killed millions for Stalin — and was erased by the same hand. Nikolai Yezhov, once the feared head of the NKVD, led Stalin’s Great Purge with brutal devotion. He signed the death warrants of thousands, believing loyalty would protect him. But in Stalin’s world, loyalty meant nothing. When his usefulness ended, Yezhov was replaced, tortured, and executed — vanishing from history and even from photographs. A man who built the machinery of terror — destroyed by the very system he created. Historical Context: The Great Purge (1936–1938) was Stalin’s campaign of political repression, led by the NKVD under Yezhov. Over 700,000 people were executed and millions more sent to Gulags. “Yezhovshchina” (“Yezhov’s era”) became synonymous with mass terror. Stalin replaced Yezhov with Lavrentiy Beria to shift blame and tighten control. Yezhov was executed in February 1940, marking the end of one phase of Stalin’s purges.
