Join us for our third session of this year’s Whitaker Jazz Speaks series. Through the power of conversation and live performance, this four-part series brings together leading voices to explore the many facets of Miles Davis’s journey. This discussion will be hosted by Dr. Esther Viola Kurtz, Assistant Professor of Ethnomusicology at WashU and author of A Beautiful Fight: The Racial Politics of Capoeira in Backland Bahia. Dr. Kurtz will discuss socio-political context of the Davis’s electric era and how his music reflected broader cultural shifts of the time. The event will also feature a special performance from the talented, fan favorite Miles Runs the Voodoo Down Octet. Led by Travis Lewis, featuring a powerhouse ensemble of the best local performers, the group will showcase an immersion into Miles Davis’s trance-inducing, genre-defining record “On the Corner”. Together, they will examine how Davis revolutionized jazz with fusion, inspired by funk, rock, and psychedelic music.
