[Anchor Lead] A lot of people head to the beach for summer vacation. The ocean is wonderful but you can also have a great time on the tidal mudflats. You may be surprised at all there is to see and enjoy on Korea’s mudflats especially in the summer. Take a look in today’s Close Up. [Pkg] The summer vacation season is in full swing. The water, the sea is the place to go. Today we head to a beach in Boryeong, Chungcheongnam-do Province where a mud festival takes place every summer. At this festival, in its 20th year, participants must be wholly covered in mud. That's the fun. People slide, fall down and really use their entire bodies. [Soundbite] Choi Ji-min(Busan Resident) : "I came from Busan to be covered in mud." [Soundbite] Yoo Yeong-beom(Daejeon Resident) : "It's a famous place so I wanted to check it out." All this mud rich in natural minerals comes from the coastal tidal flats in Boryeong. The mud is known to rejuvenate our skin and also help blood circulation. You're also getting healthy while having a blast. Let's now venture out onto the actual mudflats. The tidal range is wide on the west coast. So during the ebb tide, huge tidal flats emerge. At this beach, the mudflats appear twice a day. [Soundbite] Sin Chae-eun(Gyeonggi-do Prov. Resident) : "I've come to experience mudflats! I'm going to catch razor clams and Manila clams!" If you catch the right time, you can play on the flats for a good 4 hours. Try using a hoe to dig up some mud which reveals an oval hole. Now, sprinkle some white salt and wait. Suddenly something pops up. It's a razor clam! [Soundbite] Song Hyeon-cheol(Incheon Resident) : "The salt makes the clams pop up because they think they're back in the sea due to the salty taste." Razor clams are just in season. They are very nutritious, rich in calcium and iron. What is going on on this side of the beach? What are people catching? These are Manila clams.
