Drivers in Crystal got an unwelcome surprise Tuesday. Crystal police and five other law enforcement agencies launched a sting operation at two crosswalk intersections. The first operation took place at the corner of 59th Avenue and West Broadway in Crystal. It started at 10 in the morning and within the first five minutes, officers had pulled over several vehicles. "I'm a little surprised at the volume that we are getting," said Crystal police officer Mason Barland. One driver said he clearly saw people in the crosswalk, but said they weren't far enough into the crosswalk for him to actually stop. Crystal police gave him a ticket anyway. The driver, a retired bus driver, said he had it coming. He said he knew the law and should have stopped. The law states pedestrians have the right away at crosswalks with no traffic signals. "So if you're going say northbound and the pedestrian is crossing and they're in the southbound lane, you're required to stop till they get all the way to the other side of the northbound lane," said Barland. Crystal police say they conducted the sting after getting complaints from neighbors. "People don't stop for anybody," said Sara Fields, who lives near the busy intersection. "If you get halfway across, there's cars going behind you or there's cars going in front of you. They just don't stop." Police pulled over 93 vehicles and gave out 72 crosswalk citations during the sting. Drivers who fail to stop for pedestrians at a crosswalk can get $178 fine. Fields is hoping the sting will make people pay attention. "I think it's a good thing they're doing. Maybe people will learn to slow down."
