Ever feel weird about the photos you take? I do. While some photographers chase epic landscapes or perfect portraits, I'm drawn to ordinary things nobody else would notice. A coffee cup on the steps. Gas station prices. Workers doing their thing. In this video, I talk about why these subjects matter to me. I trace it back to the 1930s Farm Security Administration photographers - people like Dorothea Lange and Walker Evans who documented everyday American life during the Depression. Their work proved that ordinary moments deserve our attention. Photography doesn't have to be about chasing the extraordinary. It can be about being present with what's right in front of you. The camera makes you stop. The framing makes you look. The looking makes you notice. The noticing is the practice. At the end, I share an assignment we can do together: photograph something people might want to see 20 years from now. Workers, prices, discarded items, the shape of your neighborhood. No wrong way to do this.
