Today I'm trading the paddock for pit lane as I take the gravel bike to the Australian Grand Prix Track at Albert Park. The 2026 Formula 1 season begins in Melbourne this weekend, and I wanted to see if my 50mm Schwalbe G-One RX tyres could handle the infamous "kitty litter" gravel traps at Turn 1 better than an F1 car! The route kicks off at Petty’s Orchards in Templestowe, which is a popular gravel ride loop in Melbourne. Following the Main Yarra Trail, I took a few single-track side quests, but one washed-out section caught me slippin'. I didn't quite clear the gap and ended up eating a bit of dirt! Thankfully, it was a soft landing. I pushed through Dights Falls on the Capital City Trail, following the Yarra River into the CBD, and diverted along St Kilda Road passing the Metro Tunnel Project's newly completed Anzac Station before reaching the track. The atmosphere at Albert Park is electric with the crews bumping in the gear for the big race. Will we see Valtteri Bottas on the grid with his gravel bike or his new Cadillac? Does Cadillac even make gravel bikes yet? Whether you’re heading to Falls Creek for Peaks Challenge, trackside for the GP, or just firing up the barbie, have a ripper long weekend! 🦐 🍳 Route: / strava Bike: • Cannondale Gravel Bike - SuperSix Evo SE Strava: / strava Instagram: / 11thwombat #AustralianGP #F1Melbourne #GravelCycling #AlbertPark #MainYarraTrail #MelbourneCycling #F12026 #11thwombat
