The Chigorin is a variation of the Closed Ruy Lopez. It begins after the moves 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a6 4. Ba4 Nf6 5. O-O Be7 6. Re1 b5 7. Bb3 d6 8. c3 O-O 9. h3 Na5 and the move Na5 is the Chigorin Variation or the Chigorin Defense. Na5 is the beginning of the Chigorin. The move makes perfect sense if we consider what white is trying to do, play d4. We free up the c-pawn with tempo on the bishop, preparing to fight against d4 by playing c5. The drawback compared to other closed Spanish lines is that black is moving the same piece twice instead of developing with Bb7 or Re8. Marin writes: "In fact, virtually all Black's possible continuations on the 9th move have minor drawbacks, which, I repeat, makes the choice at this stage a mere matter of taste. I do not intend to question the correctness of 9 ...Bb7 or prove the superiority of 9 ...Na5 in any way, but aim to explain that in this last phase of development concrete thinking can and should be tightly connected with the appliance of general rules." (Marin 2007, 12) I cannot compete with his experience or expertise. I'm mainly a Caro-Kann player first of all, and I'm also around 500 points lower rated. The reason I chose to recommend the Chigorin over all the other variations is because I had found the positions I get from it much easier to play than those coming from all the other variations. Na5 is a logical "human" move and I understand it. The knight on a5 is black's biggest problem in the Chigorin. That is most obvious in positions with d5. When white closes the center, the knight has been deprived of it's most natural retreat square and will have a hard time getting into the game. 0:00 Introduction 01:43 Resources on the Chigorin Variation of the Ruy Lopez 06:38 History of the Chigorin Variation 13:21 Basics and first moves of the Closed Spanish 19:17 Strategy and Structures in the Chigorin Variation 27:44 Theory of the Chigorin Variation 49:11 Conclusion This is the second of 34 videos in the Spanish series.
