Mandu was also known by other names – Mandava, Mandavgarh, Mandu Durg, Shadiabad, Andnd ki Nagri or City of Joy. The Mandu fort is built on the Vindhya ranges at an altitude of 634 mts. The Mandu Fort has a wall which runs for about 45 kms, the wall has 12 gates. The Kakra Khoh, a deep ravine surrounds this hill to its west, north and east, separating it from the main Malwa Plateau. To the south the hill has a 305 mts incline where the ravine merges into the vast Nimar plains. Within the fort walls are different monuments built from time to time. Amongst them is a huge complex of palatial buildings now named as the Royal Enlcave. Some of these important landmarks are the Jahaz Mahal, Hindola Mahal, Munj Talab, Kapur Talab, Baolis, Hamam, Dilawar Khan's Mosque and many more. Mandu is about 3 hrs drive from Indore.
