The National Library of Public Information(NLPI), one of the first two public libraries established in Taiwan, used to be known as the Taichung Prefecture Library during the Japanese occupation (1923-1945). After that, it was renamed Taiwan Provincial Library in 1945, National Taichung Library in 1999 and National Library of Public Information in 2013. Its new main library building officially opened to the public on June 3, 2012. In addition to the main library, NLPI has two branch libraries: the Liming Branch and Zhongxing Branch. The NLPI is open to public, and takes on the responsibility for planning the development of nationwide public libraries. It is hoped that the NLPI is created as a big REAL (Reading, Exploring, recreAtion, Learning) library that brings together reading, leisure, exploration and life-long learning, and that it is an important driving force to elevate society by utilizing digital technology to develop services based on users’needs, and by integrating learning resources of nationwide public libraries to promote nationwide life-long learning.
