The bathhouse photos were taken with permission and at a time when no other guests were present. ................................................................................................................ 【Yunohana Onsen】 Yunohana Onsen is a hot spring town in Minamiaizu with a history of approximately 700 years. The water is colorless, nearly tasteless and odorless, but it has a slightly silky and smooth texture. Yunohana Onsen is known for its peaceful atmosphere and charmingly rustic communal baths. I especially love the location of Ishiyu, which sits right beside the Yunokizawa River that flows through the center of the hot spring town. You can soak in the warm water while feeling the presence of the serene stream. For those who prefer a quiet, secluded onsen experience without the presence of other travelers, this is truly a hidden gem. ................................................................................................................ 【Okushiobara Arayu Onsen】 Arayu Onsen is said to have been established after an earthquake in 1659 during the Edo period caused a landslide that buried the original Shiobara Motoyu Onsen. The displaced residents of Motoyu settled in a new area, utilizing the hot spring that emerged from a volcanic vent. This is why it was named Arayu (meaning "New Hot Spring") in contrast to Motoyu ("Original Hot Spring"). The spring water is a milky-white sulfuric onsen with a distinctive egg-like aroma. Arayu Onsen has two communal baths: Tera no Yu and Naka no Yu. (There used to be a third bath, Mujina no Yu, but due to natural disasters lowering the water temperature, it is no longer in use.) This time, I had the opportunity to bathe in Naka no Yu. ................................................................................................................ 【Shiobara Motoyu Onsen Eibisuya】 Motoyu Onsen is the oldest hot spring in Shiobara, discovered in 806. It was abandoned once during the Edo period due to an earthquake. However in 1884, three inns reopened in the area, continuing its legacy to this day. Ebisuya has two natural hot spring sources: "Kajiwara no Yu" and "Kobo no Yu", both of which are milky-white sulfur springs. "Kobo no Yu" is particularly interesting as it is a geyser-type spring that intermittently gushes and stops while you bathe. However, "Kobo no Yu" is only available in the mixed-gender bath, so female visitors should be aware of this. Additionally, this inn is one of the rare places in Tochigi where guests can stay for a self-catering onsen retreat, making it a valuable destination for those seeking a traditional touji (hot spring therapy) experience. ................................................................................................................ 【Shiobara Shionoyu Onsen Myogaya Honkan】 The highlight of this place is undoubtedly the riverside open-air bath. You descend 88 steps down the gorge to reach a spacious, open-air hot spring where you can soak while gazing directly at the flowing stream. The open-air bath features two natural hot spring sources: "Kariko no Yu" and "Myogaya Gensen", which was discovered in 2012. Kariko no Yu has a slightly salty taste and a yellowish-brown cloudy appearance, while Myogaya Gensen is a simple hot spring with a slightly dark hue. ................................................................................................................ ■ Location ・Yunohana Onsen(〒967-0333 Minamiaizu-gun, Fukushima) ・Okushiobara Arayu Onsen(〒329-2922 Nasushiobara-city, Tochigi) ・Shiobara Motoyu Onsen Eibisuya(〒329-2922 Nasushiobara-city, Tochigi) ・Hunter Mountain Shiobara(〒329-2922 Nasushiobara-city, Tochigi) ・Shiobara Shionoyu Onsen Myogaya Honkan(〒329-2921 Nasushiobara-city, Tochigi) ................................................................................................................ ■ SNS / onsenculture / onsenculture #onsen #japantravel #japantrip
