Immunotherapy is a recent advancement in the management of cancers and it is widely accepted in a few forms of cancer, where it is proven to offer a reasonable benefit in treating the patient. For instance treatment of melanoma, immunotherapy is commonly used as a treatment modality. What is Immunotherapy? Immunotherapy for cancer is a biological therapy that boosts the body’s immune system to fight foreign substances and abnormal cells of tumors. In the case of head and neck cancers, there is evidence that proves that immunotherapy is beneficial as the second line of treatment for advanced head and neck cancer (stage 4 metastasis - when the patient is not responding well to palliative chemotherapy). In majority of the studies conducted Immunotherapy as a treatment modality for head and neck cancers are found to be effective only in 20 - 25% of the patients. The studies found that the patients were having a dramatic response - with good tumor response rates and improvement in quality of life.
